High School Football: CdM’s Carter named Pacific Coast League MVP, Moore Defensive MVP
Corona del Mar High senior quarterback Cayman Carter took home the Pacific Coast League MVP award and junior middle linebacker Alex Moore shared the Defensive MVP honor after the two helped the Sea Kings win their second straight CIF Southern Section Southern Division football championship.
Carter and Moore are two of 10 CdM players receiving first-team all-league laurels for leading the Sea Kings (12-2, 5-0 in league) to their first undefeated league title in the program’s history.
The Sea Kings’ other first-team selections were senior Griff Amies, who earned the league Kicker of the Year award, junior center Giovanni Gentosi, senior wide receiver Troy Reese, senior defensive end Tim Reinhardt, senior cornerback Ryan Griffin, senior running back Kai Wilson, senior defensive end Greg Williford and senior left guard Michael Martinez.
CdM’s second-team picks were junior right tackle Brett Olson, sophomore running back Cole Martin, sophomore receiver Bo St. Geme, sophomore linebacker Hoyt Crance and senior punter Luke Napolitano.
Carter was a dual threat for CdM, which ended the season with a 35-10 win against Garden Grove in the Southern Division finale at Angel Stadium.
Carter, in his first year as a starter, threw for 2,210 yards and 17 touchdowns, with only six interceptions. He completed 167 of 290 passes, setting a CdM single-season completion record.
Carter rushed 197 times for 1,073 yards and 15 touchdowns.
In CdM’s last 10 games, Carter threw 15 touchdowns and only one interception. During the stretch, Carter led the Sea Kings to 10 straight victories, the longest winning streak during a season in CdM’s history.
Moore finished with 143 tackles, averaging 10.2 tackles per game, one sack, two fumbles caused, one fumble recovery and one interception. Moore’s interception came on the first play from scrimmage in the Southern Division title game. He returned it 30 yards for a touchdown.
Moore, who shared the Defensive MVP with Northwood’s Joe Dunleavy, anchored a CdM defensive unit that shut out its first three playoff opponents. The only other time the program had opened the playoffs with three straight shutouts was in 1989, when CdM completed a back-to-back section title run.
Amies finished the season with 22 field goals, tying him for the state’s single-season record. He attempted 30 field goals.
Amies converted a 43-yard field goal-attempt in the Southern Division title game. The field goal tied the state record set by Chris Sailer of Notre Dame of Sherman Oaks in 1994.
Reese caught 55 passes for 803 yards and nine touchdowns.
Reinhardt had 47 tackles, nine sacks and one forced fumble.
Griffin made 58 tackles, intercepted four passes and recovered one fumble.
Wilson rushed 126 times for 1,058 yards and nine touchdowns.
Williford had 33 tackles, two sacks, one fumble recovery, one forced fumble and one interception.
